Geauga County, OH – A three-car crash on Wednesday morning in Geauga County was caused by a distracted driver who reportedly dropped his doughnut, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. on Rock Creek Road, state trooper William Head of the patrol’s Chardon post reported.

According to authorities, the driver responsible for the crash admitted he was unfamiliar with the area and became distracted while reaching for his coffee and dropping a doughnut.

As he traveled east on Rock Creek Road, he approached a curve and crest in the road, veered left of center, and side-swiped a westbound vehicle. He then collided with another car traveling west.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found one person trapped inside a vehicle, requiring assistance from Hambden Township firefighters to be removed.

The driver of the first car sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, while the second car’s driver suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. The driver of the third vehicle, however, sustained serious injuries, including four broken ribs, a broken wrist, and a broken knee. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities cited the at-fault driver for distracted driving and failing to stay in his lane. The crash led to a road closure for approximately three hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to urge drivers to remain focused on the road to prevent similar incidents.
