Drug-Impaired Driver in High-Speed Hit-and-Run Chase Arrested After Wild Pursuit on Long Island

A reckless driver sparked a dramatic chase across multiple Long Island highways on Sunday, culminating in police apprehending the Brentwood man after an intense pursuit.

A 29-year-old man named Christian Reyes was reportedly behind the wheel of a black 1997 Toyota Camry shortly before noon when he allegedly collided with a 1998 Honda and fled the scene, according to police reports.

Authorities initially observed the Camry as it moved close to Exit 30 on the Southern State Parkway in Oyster Bay. As authorities attempted to stop him, Reyes — reportedly under the influence of drugs — accelerated and fled, initiating a perilous high-speed pursuit.

Reyes dangerously maneuvered through traffic, almost crashing into several vehicles, according to police, as he traveled west toward the Belt Parkway, ultimately heading toward JFK Airport.

As congestion increased, Reyes began colliding with cars and even backed into police vehicles and other automobiles in a frantic effort to break free, as reported by officials.

Ultimately, the congestion on Long Island became overwhelming, prompting Reyes to exit his vehicle.

Law enforcement pursued him and subdued him before he could escape. Reyes sustained slight injuries during the apprehension and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center.

Authorities are currently waiting for the results of a toxicology report to identify the specific substance involved.
