Miami Standard (Houston, TX) – Authorities collaborated to apprehend five individuals linked to an elaborate fraud operation associated with a Romanian crime syndicate active in the U.S.
Authorities in Texas have announced the arrest of Elizabeta Stefan and Madalin Trifu, who now face charges related to forgery aimed at deception. Authorities have apprehended three more individuals—Vasile Trifu, Ion Trifu, and Catalin Trifu.
Vasile Trifu faces arrest due to allegations of ATM skimming, while Ion Trifu and Catalin Trifu are in custody of Homeland Security Investigations.
Authorities report that the group has engaged in various criminal activities, including vehicle theft, ATM skimming, organized retail theft, and the creation of counterfeit documents. Moreover, they are thought to have participated in identity theft, financial exploitation tactics, and various other types of financial wrongdoing.

On Tuesday, authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in Houston, uncovering multiple counterfeit passports and identification cards meant for illicit activities.
Legal filings claim that Stefan and Madalin Trifu acquired counterfeit Romanian passports. Madalin Trifu is reportedly accused of possessing a counterfeit Washington state driver’s license during an earlier arrest last February.
Authorities in Houston received a lead indicating that counterfeit passports were set to arrive at a residence in a package. They played a role in carrying out the search warrant.
“Financial crimes pose an evolving threat to consumers and businesses. Criminals are using fraudulent documents, payment card skimming, and social engineering tactics to deceive victims and bypass security measures, which underlines the importance of interagency collaboration in identifying, investigating, and disrupting these illicit activities,” the Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center said.
