Miami Standard (Aurora, CO) – A Tesla driver, recorded at 97 mph on East Alameda Avenue in Aurora, lost his life after running a red light and triggering a collision with three other vehicles.
On Monday evening at approximately 8 p.m., a Traffic Officer from the Aurora Police Department was performing speed enforcement in the vicinity of East Alameda Parkway and South Quintero Way. The officer recorded a driver heading west on Alameda at a speed of 97 mph, according to a police news release.
Police report that an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the driver of the Tesla seemingly sped away. Consequently, the officer turned off his emergency lights and chose not to follow the pursuit.
A Tesla driver was reported to have continued west on Alameda Avenue, where he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection with South Airport Boulevard/South Airport Road, colliding with a vehicle heading north on that road, according to APD.
The collision resulted in the Tesla spinning and colliding with two additional cars. A vehicle involved in the incident was an Aurora Police car that was halted at the intersection, preparing to turn left.
The driver of the Tesla was partially ejected during the crash and was declared dead at the scene. Authorities reported that he is a 26-year-old individual hailing from Centennial.
Six individuals, including two adults and four children, from the car that was part of the first crash were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Both the Aurora Police officer and the other driver emerged unscathed.
The incident led to the Tesla igniting in flames. The closure of the intersection at Alameda and Buckley/Airport lasted until approximately 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities had to allow the vehicle to cool down before it could be removed from the location.
The accident resulted in damage to the road and traffic signals, necessitating repairs before the thoroughfare could completely reopen.
“Honestly it was pretty harrowing,” Alison Milano said.
Milano released a video she recorded on her phone showcasing the aftermath. “There were lots of cops, lots of fire trucks. It was just all and all very chaotic in the moment,” Milano said.
