Monsoon storm chances persist this week

To begin the week, the monsoon has remained extremely active over New Mexico. Daily storm possibilities will remain until the end of the week.

Monday has been an extremely active weather day in portions of New Mexico. Storms dumped heavy rains across sections of the state. Wind gusts of up to 66 mph blasted into Albuquerque, resulting in a major dust storm with visibility as low as a quarter mile at times. High winds also generated haboobs near Deming. The majority of the rain finished tonight, but a few storms are still emptying out of southern New Mexico. Rain may return to southeast New Mexico overnight and into Tuesday morning.

Cloudy clouds may restrict heavy rainfall in eastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon. However, areas with plenty of sunshine are more likely to see thunderstorms and heavy rain. Regardless, rain and storms are expected again Tuesday afternoon.

A more classic monsoon pattern will return Wednesday, with precipitation moving into New Mexico from the south. Storms will begin over the highlands and travel northward Wednesday afternoon, pushed by steering winds. Storms will travel from west to east on Thursday, building over the mountains in the late morning/early afternoon before moving into central and eastern New Mexico later in the day.

Dry weather returns to New Mexico for the Fourth of July, while hotter weather rolls in. This period of dry and hot weather will continue into the weekend.
