MIAMI — A woman was hurt Saturday morning when the Brickell Avenue Bridge began to rise while she was still crossing it, forcing her to collapse in a scary scene captured on tape.
The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. on the drawbridge that connects downtown Miami and Brickell.
Conor Walsh, a witness, detailed what happened when the bridge began to lift.
“She was trying to climb up the bridge,” Walsh explained. “As she got halfway up, she was holding on to the side and then she just dropped.”
When entirely horizontal, the Brickell Avenue Bridge measures 90 feet in length. As it climbed, the woman struggled to stay upright before tumbling.
Within minutes, first responders rushed to the site.
According to authorities, the bridge tender said that the woman had been “causing a scene” prior to the event. Witnesses described similar conduct.
“She was dancing and playing,” another witness reported.
“Three police cars, the medic … it was pretty, pretty hectic,” says Walsh.
The bridge tender reported to authorities that the woman was masturbating, and another witness stated that she appeared to be “under the influence of something” before the bridge began to raise.
According to police, one of the first responders was injured while assisting the woman and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
“When the police came, it was a big struggle to hold her still and stop making it worse,” Walsh told the reporter.
According to authorities, the woman was brought to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Her age, identity, and condition have not yet been revealed.
