Two persons were rushed to a local hospital Friday morning following a suspected robbery and police shooting, according to Sweetwater police. The pursuit began in Sweetwater and finished in Medley.
Officials stated a third person was taken into custody.
Authorities from several organizations, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the FBI, are currently investigating.
Police: Officers prevented a robbery in process.
Sweetwater Police Chief Sergio Diez and department spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta spoke at a press conference Thursday afternoon about the incident, which occurred around 10:50 a.m. inside a warehouse near Northwest 108th Avenue and 17th Street.
Zabaleta stated that Sweetwater officers responded swiftly to multiple 911 calls reporting an armed robbery in progress.
“Once they got here, they confronted the subjects that were committing this crime,” Zabaleta told the reporter. “There were shots fired. A police chase occurred, taking cops northbound and ending in the city of Medley, where the three individuals were captured.
One suspect has been shot, while another has been hospitalized.
According to Zabaleta, one of the seized individuals was discovered with an apparent gunshot wound and taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
“There was a second person that was also transported, not related to any gun violence or any gunshots, however, still was requesting some medical attention and he’s listed in stable condition,” the police officer said. “A third individual still remains in custody here as part of the investigation.”
Zabaleta stressed that the FBI is currently heading the investigation into the crime.
Police chief: “Today is a good day”
Chief Diez stated that no cops were wounded in the incident.
“So, today is a good day, because none of my officers were hurt,” Diez told reporters.
“We were able to come in the middle of a robbery, which is what cops do. We attempt to catch the evil individuals and ensure that our victims remain safe. So for me, this was a fantastic day because none of my policemen were injured.”
Diez stated that the FDLE is in charge of the police shooting investigation and that some of the officers involved are now being interviewed.
