7 Dead After Truck Crosses Center Line, Crashes Into Tour Van Near Yellowstone, Police Say

Idaho State Police say the pickup truck that hit and killed seven people last week near Yellowstone National Park crossed the centre line of the highway and hit the van.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday that they have found that the Dodge Ram pickup truck crossed the centre line on U.S. Highway 20 and hit the Mercedes passenger van. What made the driver turn into oncoming traffic is still being looked into by the police.

Along with the driver, there were twelve Chinese tourists and one Italian tourist in the van. Police, the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, and the Italian Consulate General in San Francisco all say that five Chinese tourists, one Italian tourist, and the pickup driver died in the crash.

Police had already said that the pickup driver was 25-year-old Isaih Moreno. The crash took place Thursday night near eastern Idaho’s Henry’s Lake State Park. Yellowstone National Park is about 26 kilometres (16 miles) west of the state park.

At the time, the truck was going west and the van was going east towards Yellowstone. Video from the scene showed that the weather was clear at the time.

Police say that after the crash, both cars caught fire. Police say that the results of DNA tests will be needed to find out who the other people who died were. Police say that eight other people in the van were hurt.

Police said that the National Transportation Safety Board is also looking into the crash on its own because a commercial truck was involved and because it was so big. Police say that NTSB workers have been to the area and are looking over the evidence.

The most current data from the International Trade Administration shows that 36% of international visitors who came to the U.S. by air chose to visit national parks and monuments as their favourite thing to do for fun while they were here.
