California Police Chase Turns Chaotic as Driver Throws Live Grenade From Stolen Car

At the end of a car chase on Friday, police caught a man in California for throwing a live hand grenade from a stolen car, which was a very strange thing for him to do. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Golden Gate Division says the grenade was in a bag with part of the pin taken out when it was thrown out the window of the car that was speeding away.

A post on the CHP – Golden Gate Division’s Facebook page says that the crime happened on Friday, May 2, just after 3:30 pm, when police saw a stolen car on Oakland’s 38th Street and Cerrito Avenue. The car, which the CHP says was driven by Carlos Kuceja, 28, of Berkeley, California, reportedly ran away when police tried to stop it.

The California Highway Patrol said that during the chase, Kuceja was seen throwing a bag out the driver’s side window. Authorities say that a nearby CHP officer looked inside the bag and saw the grenade inside. The University of California, Berkeley, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was then called and confirmed that the grenade was live and could explode. Police then evacuated homes and businesses in the area.

A Mk.2 “pineapple” fragmentation-style grenade, which was used by the U.S. military for many years and was regular issue for soldiers in World War II, looks a lot like the one that was found. Pieces of these can kill people up to 150 feet away.

Even though he is said to have thrown a bomb, Kuceja was caught. During the chase, he turned down a street that led nowhere, and he was caught when he tried to run away on foot. His car was searched, but no other explosives were found. The police also searched Kuceja’s multi-unit home where he lived and did not find any more bombs there.

Kuceja was caught and sent to Dublin’s Santa Rita Jail, where he is being held on multiple charges, such as having a stolen car, running away from police, fighting arrest, and, not surprisingly, having and transporting a destructive device.
