Florida Boat Collision Leaves 1 Dead, 10 Injured

Clearwater, Florida — On the last day of a sand-sculpting festival in Florida, a recreational boat hit a ferry carrying 45 people. The crash killed one person and hurt at least 10 others, according to officials.

The crash late Sunday night in calm water off of Clearwater on the western coast of Florida called for help because so many people could have been hurt. The police released a video of the accident at a news conference on Monday. It showed the RV hitting the ferry from behind at dusk near a causeway.

“All of a sudden, we heard the first mate yelling, ‘Hey hey hey!’ The ride was great!” Mark Vacheco told WFTS that he was on the boat with Brenda Alvarez and their two young children. “When we turned around to look back, this big yacht had just gone through the boat.”

The person who was driving the recreational boat was helping the police, and a breathalyser test showed that they were not impaired by drink, officials said. The recreational boat only stayed in the accident area for a short time. Police found it about 5.6 kilometres (3.5 miles) away. Officials said that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the State Attorney’s Office were working together to decide if any charges would be brought.

This is what Capt. Matthew Dallarosa of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said: “If someone is involved in an accident, you should always stay at the scene.”

Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy said that people who answered 911 calls from the scene of the accident heard “horrific screaming” in the background.

Tony Tedesco, EMS chief for Clearwater Fire Rescue, said that the people who were hurt had broken bones, soft tissue injuries, and head injuries.

The only people on the ferry who were hurt were adults.

“When our crews first arrived, they found themselves in the water trying to rescue people,” he said. “On top of that, they are trying to figure out who was hurt the most.”

The boat landed on a sandbar not far from the Memorial Causeway bridge. The crash took place in an area without speed restrictions.

Alvarez said, “You never expect any of this to happen.” “We want to know how fast they were going because it doesn’t make sense that they could hit and get away that quickly.”

The family was not injured in the crash.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a social media post that on-scene reports indicated that all 45 people on the ferry and all six people on the boat were accounted for.

“All local hospitals have been notified. Multiple trauma alerts have been called with helicopters transporting two of the more badly injured,” the post said.

Videos on social media showed several first responders running to the scene with lights flashing. Several Good Samaritans also helped the boat passengers get to safety, officials said.

Sunday was the last day of the Sugar Sand event, a 17-day sand-sculpting event in Clearwater Beach.

The Coast Guard said the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission will lead the investigation into the reason of the crash.
