Man Arrested After Allegedly Destroying Dozens of Trees with Chainsaw

A person has been apprehended in connection with the crime, which involved the removal of countless trees across Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, April 22, the Los Angeles Police Department announced the arrest of Samuel Patrick Groft, who is suspected of felony vandalism after allegedly cutting down trees in downtown Los Angeles, the Westlake District, and Glassell Park.

The Los Angeles citizen was arrested at 4:30 p.m., local time, when LAPD Rampart Detectives found him near Custer Avenue and West Sunset Boulevard. His bond was set at $150,00, according to online jail records seen by PEOPLE.

Groft’s arrest came shortly after the Los Angeles Police Department issued a community notice warning to “use caution and do not approach.”

Police said officers discovered evidence linking Groft to tree cutting on April 17, 18, 19, and 22. The trees were chopped down at various times of day, including about 12:00 a.m. on the 500 block of North Broadway Avenue and around 2:00 p.m. on the 300 block of Treadwell Street.

While an investigation is underway, police estimated at a press conference on Wednesday that 11 trees had been cut down, according to KNBC. According to the outlet, the damage to at least eight trees is estimated to be $347,000 in total.

“I’ve never seen somebody go out and attack trees, particularly around Earth Day. Everyone wanted to know who had done it and why. We know who. “The why will be part of the investigation,” LAPD Commander Lilian Carranza stated at the press conference, according to KNBC.

According to the press release, police shared Groft’s booking photo because detectives are “seeking additional victims as they believe the suspect may be responsible for additional unreported crimes.” PEOPLE has contacted the LAPD for comment.

Mayor Karen Bass addressed the event in a statement obtained by KABC-TV, calling it “truly beyond comprehension.”

“City public works crews are assessing the damage and we will be making plans to quickly replace these damaged trees,” according to a statement. “LAPD has opened an investigation into what happened and those responsible must be held accountable.”

According to KTTV, City Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado submitted a resolution Wednesday that would come before the council’s public works and public safety committees to increase fines for anyone who injures or cuts city trees.

Anyone with information on the tree-cutting incident is encouraged to contact the LAPD Rampart Burglary Theft Detectives at (213) 484-3490. Calls during non-business hours or on weekends should be addressed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (1-877-527-3247).
