On Saturday, April 19, an inmate battered one correctional officer, resulting in significant face injuries.
According to authorities, Unique Tyson, 28, of Egg Harbor Township, an ACJF inmate, willfully committed aggravated assault by hitting a corrections officer (CO) with a closed fist many times. According to the criminal complaint, the punches struck the correctional officer’s left facial area, causing him to lose consciousness and rendering him unable to defend himself, all within the ACJF’s guarded perimeter.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the CO was conducting a medication pass in the H-R housing units when he opened cell 10 to “assist medical staff” in administering Tyson’s medication. Police say Tyson lunged at the CO as he went for the tiny plastic cup he was holding after finishing his medication.
The affidavit stated that the CO “retreated toward cell 12” and was pursued by Tyson. Tyson seized the CO and began “punching multiple times,” police alleged. The CO was shoved against the cell 11 door, and he “threw 11 closed-fist punches to the officer’s left facial area.”
According to investigators, the CO lost consciousness and was unable to fight or protect himself at the time. According to authorities, the CO was then placed on a backboard and transferred to the hospital via ambulance due to facial injuries.
Police added that witness reports, body camera footage, and CCTV recordings all confirmed the facts of the incident. The officer’s name was suppressed to protect the CO.
Tyson is accused with aggravated assault, a second-degree offense. He will have a detention hearing on Friday, April 25.
