Evacuations are underway as a wildfire breaks out in New Jersey

Barnegat, New Jersey — Mandatory evacuations are in effect after a wildfire broke out in Ocean County on Tuesday.

The blaze started at the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area in Barnegat and has expanded to at least 1200 acres, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Fire engines, a Forest Fire Service helicopter, and a contact air tanker with a water drop capacity of 600 gallons were all deployed.

As of 4:30 p.m., officials reported that the fire was 0% contained.

In Ocean Township, evacuations are ongoing along Wells Mills Road from Bryant Road to the Garden State Parkway. Wells Mills Park is closed.

The following highways have also been closed:

  • Route 532 between Route 72 and Garden State Parkway
  • Bryant Road between Route 539 and Route 532
  • Jones Road between Bryant Road and Route 532

On Bryant and Wells Mills Roads, 16 structures have been evacuated.
