6-year-old Starved to Death by Father who Kept him Locked in Closet; Arizona Authorities Say other Two Kids Healthy and Loved

A man from northern Arizona was found guilty on Thursday of first-degree murder and other offenses in connection with the tragic death of his 6-year-old son due to starvation in 2020.

A shocking case has emerged where a young boy, Deshaun Martinez, was subjected to a distressing ordeal. For a month, he and his older brother were confined to a cramped bedroom closet for 16 hours each day. This extreme punishment was inflicted upon them by their parents, who were unaware of their nighttime food thefts while they slept.

A jury in Coconino County Superior Court has reached a verdict in the case of 28-year-old Anthony Martinez, finding him guilty in the death of a young boy. Martinez was found guilty of multiple charges, including child abuse, kidnapping, and aggravated assault on law enforcement officers. The sentencing date has been scheduled for June 28th.

The boy’s autopsy revealed that his weight at the time of his death was only 18 pounds (8.1 kilograms), which was significantly below the average for his age. The cause of death was classified as a homicide.

Another conviction was handed down on Thursday, marking the second in the case. In July 2023, Elizabeth Archibeque, the boy’s mother, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse. As a result, she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, defense attorney Joseph Carver argued in his closing statements this week that Archibeque had a dominant role in the couple’s relationship, while Anthony Martinez seemed to lack independent decision-making when it came to parenting their children.

According to prosecutor Michael Tunink, all the evidence in the case indicated that Martinez was responsible for creating and maintaining the condition the boys were in, as reported by the newspaper.

Flagstaff police discovered the lifeless body of the 6-year-old boy after his paternal grandmother, Ann Martinez, contacted 911 on March 2, 2020, expressing her belief that her grandson had passed away.

Ann Martinez has entered a plea of not guilty to multiple charges, which include allegations of child abuse related to her disciplinary methods involving the use of a coat hanger. The trial has been set for August.

Archibeque and Anthony Martinez initially believed that their sons’ malnourished state was caused by a medical condition and the consumption of diet or caffeine pills for an extended period of time.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun, Anthony Martinez informed authorities that the boys had a simple breakfast and lunch consisting of oatmeal and bread. According to the newspaper, Martinez confessed to positioning himself near the closet while playing video games to prevent the boys from escaping.

Authorities have reported a distressing case involving Deshaun Martinez and his younger brother. According to police, the two children were confined to a closet for an extended period, from 8 p.m. to noon every day for a month. During this time, they were provided with minimal food and were prevented from attending school.

Authorities have reported that the closet was found to be lined with an orange plastic sheet emitting a strong odor.

The older boy managed to survive, although he was severely underweight at just 28 pounds (12.7 kilograms) when he was discovered by the police. He was admitted to a hospital and made a full recovery after undergoing treatment for almost three weeks.

The police confirmed that the couple’s two other children, who were 2 and 4 years old in 2020, were found to be in good health and had normal weight. They did not have any specific restrictions at home.
