$500 Monthly Payments to California Residents—Application Process Explained

Next week, applications will open for a pilot program that aims to provide hundreds of dollars per month to eligible California residents.

Applications for the City of Pomona Household Universal Grants Program (Pomona HUG) will be accepted starting June 17. Eligible applicants residing in Pomona, California will have the opportunity to participate in the income pilot. This program aims to provide parents with children under the age of four a monthly stipend of $500 for a duration of 18 months.

600 eligible applicants will be randomly selected through a lottery, but not all of them will receive the monthly $500. A group of 250 individuals will be provided with a monthly payment, as well as extra resources and support services.

Additionally, the remaining 350 participants will be assigned to a control group and will receive $20 payments over a period of 18 months. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles will closely monitor both groups and compare their progress.

  • If you are 18 years or older and currently reside in the city of Pomona, you are eligible to apply.
  • If you have a child under four years old, you are considered the parent or legal guardian at the time of the application.

  • If you have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, reside in a qualified census tract (QCT), receive benefits such as Federal Pell Grants, Medicaid or MediCal, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or have a household income at or below 65 percent AMI, you may have experienced a negative impact. Opening Date

Mark your calendars for June 17 at 8 a.m. PT, when applications will become available. Make sure to gather the necessary documents, such as proof of identification and a recent utility bill, rental or mortgage agreement, to establish your address in Pomona. Additionally, you will be required to furnish information regarding your child, including a birth certificate.

You can submit your applications here once the window opens and the deadline for submission is July 8.

Schedule of Payments

After the application period ends, a lottery will be held on July 10 to determine group assignments. Following that, there will be a review period from July 10 to August 1.

Successful applicants will receive notification of their approval by August 12, with the first payments being issued through reloadable debit cards on August 26.
