4-year-old Dead after Severe Malnutrition in Ohio; Docs Say Rotten Teeth due to Diet Soda with Severe Bruising

A woman from Ohio has received a prison sentence of at least nine years following the tragic death of her 4-year-old daughter. The child suffered from severe malnutrition, with her teeth decaying due to a diet primarily consisting of Mountain Dew.

A 41-year-old woman from Clermont County has been sentenced after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, as reported by The Cincinnati Enquirer.

According to prosecutors, the child tragically passed away in January 2022 due to neglect and abuse by her parents. It was reported by local affiliate station FOX 19 that she suffered from diabetes-related complications after being given Mountain Dew through a baby bottle. According to the outlet, the girl had suffered significant tooth decay and had very few teeth remaining.

According to a report by The Cincinnati Enquirer, Banks would occasionally combine baby formula with soda and continue to feed her daughter through a bottle, even after she should have stopped using it. Additionally, prosecutors noted that investigators were unable to locate any evidence suggesting the girl had visited a dentist.

“This case is incredibly heartbreaking,” said Clay Tharp, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Clermont County, in an interview with The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Christopher Hoeb, the father of the girl, is facing charges in connection with her death and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 11, according to the outlet. According to Clermont County Prosecutor Mark Tekulve, Banks and Hoeb have been indicted on charges including murder, involuntary manslaughter, and endangering a child. This information was reported by FOX 19.

According to FOX 19, a judge has already dismissed the charges of murder and child endangerment.

According to WCPO, prosecutors have revealed that the girl had been dealing with undiagnosed and untreated diabetes for an extended period. She passed away due to diabetic ketoacidosis, a severe complication of diabetes where ketones accumulate in the bloodstream, as stated by the Mayo Clinic.

According to a report by WCPO, Hoeb and Banks discovered their daughter in an unresponsive state on January 21, 2022, prompting them to immediately contact emergency services. She was transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where she was ultimately pronounced brain-dead and subsequently removed from life support. According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, she passed away four days later.

According to Tharp, the tragic loss of the girl’s life could have been avoided if her parents had taken proper care of her diabetes. Tharp expressed the belief that this young life could have been saved.

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, prosecutors have revealed that Banks has previous instances of her older children experiencing similar incidents under her care. This includes her son who fell into a coma at the age of 4 due to undiagnosed diabetes. According to the outlet, prosecutors have stated that Banks’ son continued to be neglected even after waking up from the coma, as he failed to attend follow-up appointments with doctors.

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, Banks expressed in court that she believed she was doing her best to take care of her daughter.

The outlet also mentioned that according to Ohio state law, Banks could potentially serve up to 13 and a half years if the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction decides to extend her sentence based on her behavior while in jail.
