In the US, a videotape of the cult film “The Terminator” was sold at an online auction for $32,500, according to TMZ.
The VHS tape was released in 1984, immediately after the premiere of the film directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The auction organizers note that the lot is in excellent condition, which was probably one of the key factors in the high price.
This record-breaking sale of collectible media is a reminder of the growing popularity of retro videotapes among collectors. Previously, unique art objects had attracted similar interest. For example, a toy stable by British street artist Banksy was sold at auction in England for £1 million (approximately $1.34 million). The lot was put up for auction at Anderson and Garland, and the owners of the miniature park in Great Yarmouth (Norfolk) replaced the original work with a copy in the park in advance.
Sales of such rare items demonstrate the growing interest in pop culture and contemporary art among collectors around the world, where the condition and uniqueness of a lot directly affect its value.
