All the Cool Girls Are Wearing Balenciaga

Published

on

2021 might have been Balenciaga‘s biggest year yet, and its success shows no sign of slowing down as we’re only two weeks into 2022, and everyone is trying to get on Demna‘s friends and family list.

Since he joined Balenciaga, Demna has understood the importance of celebrity when it comes to marketing, most recently making Kim Kardashian his muse as she wore the label almost exclusively towards the tail end of last year. Her SNL appearance was filled with plenty of iconic looks, and Kardashian and the designer even went to the Met Gala together. It is a friendship that keeps on giving, to say the least.

Kim isn’t the only one who’s been on the Balenciaga wave, Hailey Bieber has been doing what she does best: street style. Just the other day, she was snapped sporting a Balenciaga logo cap, an oversized blazer on top of a hoodie, tailored trousers, and a pair of funky Runner sneakers – a house signature. Hailey’s style is always effortless but chic, but in Balenciaga, she’s reached a new level of cool.

In addition to Hailey and Kim, Euphoria actress Alexa Demie has also been on Demna’s radar. For the premiere of the show’s second season, Demie had not only one, but three custom looks made for her which she flaunted in a Vogue video. As if her character on the show wasn’t cool enough, she’s even cooler in real life – especially in the black sequin dress on the red carpet.

Then, we also have Dua Lipa.

After her album Future Nostalgia took the world (and the charts) by storm in 2020, she’s been everywhere. Her Instagram is a go-to place for inspiration, as her eclectic style is something between Y2K sweetheart and streetwear baddie. Of course, she’s also wearing Balenciaga.

I could go on and on, there are endless examples. Cardi B, Isabelle Huppert, and more have been frequent wearers of Demna’s Balenciaga, and we’re hoping to see even more of it in 2022.

One thing is for sure, and that is that Demna and Balenciaga sure know what they’re doing when it comes to selecting brand ambassadors, and creating hype through celebrity marketing. And it is clearly working because I have never wanted to be a Balenciaga girl more than I do right now.

Maison Margiela x Reebok Just Keeps Getting Better

Published

Through their ongoing collaboration, Maison Margiela and Reebok have proved that their hybrid sneakers aren’t just random hype drops, but shoes are actually memorable and noteworthy — exceptionally unique if you will. And so is their latest release, the Classic Leather Tabi Décortique Low. A low-top take of the gladiator sandal-inspired Classic Leather Tabi High that was released last summer, the sneaker sees John Galliano’s signature decortiqué technique applied to Reebok’s Classic Leather silhouette.

The collaboration was first introduced during the Maison’s Spring/Summer 2020 Artisanal show with the Tabi Instapump Fury, a fusion of a platform heel and sneaker, which featured the iconic Tabi toe. Then came a series of makeovers on the Reebok Classics; there was the Classic Leather Tabi followed by the Club C Maison Margiela. In June 2021, the Classic Leather Tabi High was released, of which we’re now getting the Low.

The Maison Margiela x Reebok Classic Leather Decortiqué Low is a reinterpretation of the Classic Leather Tabi, which was created by merging of the two brand archives, adding the signature Tabi split-toe to Reebok’s Classic Leather silhouette. Both the Tabi and the Classic Leather were introduced in the ‘80s and have since become iconic pieces for their houses.

We spoke to a Maison Margiela representative about the process behind the collaboration who explained that Maison Margiela x Reebok is firmly built on true synergy that stems from fusing both brands’ icons and design languages together. “The Initial Classic Leather Tabi style was the result of that philosophy, and the Classic Leather Tabi Decortiqué seemed like the logical base to continue that narrative.”

Galliano’s décortiqué technique has been an integral part of his collections at Maison Margiela for the past few seasons and has been used by the designer to rework garments, from coats and jackets to pants and dresses, to their core, leaving “a memory of what the piece supposed to be.” Décortiqué uses figurative forms of cut to symbolize the gaps in the curated images we’re constantly surrounded by, highlighting the identifiable characteristics ingrained in our collective memory and stimulating our visual recognition.

Removing material off an object — or footwear — almost always results in challenging the shoe’s stability. Think of it as architecture, where you remove pillars to achieve a more radical design and or proportions without making the building collapse.

For the Classic Leather Tabi Decortiqué Low, the technique is used to cut away leather panels and peel off layers revealing the authentic structure and inner lining of the shoe. The Tabi split-toe is added to the deconstructed Classic Leather silhouette and Maison Margiela’s trademark numbers to the tongue tag. “As basic as its sounds, the first step in applying the décortiqué technique to the sneaker is actually just a sketch and a pair of scissors,” says Maison Margiela’s spokesperson. “Removing material off an object – or footwear – almost always results in challenging the shoe’s stability. Think of it as architecture, where you remove pillars to achieve a more radical design and or proportions without making the building collapse.”

Like the high-top version, this drop features four colorways — tonal black, white, red, and Bianchetto. The latter is another technique associated with Maison Margiela that consists of hand-painting white on a black leather base so that it chips and fades away with wear.

The Maison Margiela x Reebok Classic Leather Tabi Decortiqué low launches on January 28 here.

In the past few years, the running footwear scene has been blown wide open. New names have entered the space to challenge the old guard and none has done that more effectively than On. The Swiss brand has not so slowly taken over the performance sphere with distinctive visuals and equally attractive technicals. The latest release to catch our eye is the Cloudultra Nite.

This limited-edition drop is based on the high-tech Cloudultra trail runner but sees the silhouette updated for everyday wear and optimized visibility at night time. The most notable new asset of the On Cloudultra Nite is the reflective section added to the black upper which reveals itself in the dark, reflecting muted rainbow hues when lit up.

As for the returning specialties, two layers of stacked CloudTec from Helion Superfoam provide the smoothest ride around, suited well to long mountain runs and dance floors alike. Missiongrip to the outsole provides trusty grip on rough terrain while a durable mesh upper offers climate control.

Two pairs scheduled to drop in October.

After giving the 57/40 a stealthy execution for its Fall/Winter 2021 lineup, Comme des Garçons and New Balance have joined forces once again for a new sneaker project.

Previewed today as part of Comme des Garçons Homme’s Fall/Winter 2022 offerings are two simple New Balance 550 collabs coming in predominantly black and white-based colorways. The images of the shoes shared by Fashion Snap reveal that the first pair incorporates white accents on the tongue tag, ankle collar, and “550” embroidery while the latter shoe dons black piping at the midfoot. Distinguishing these two pairs from standard 550 styles is co-branding stamped on the heel.

In addition, CDG recently previewed two Nike Air Max 97 collabs that are dropping as part of the label’s Fall/Winter 2022-23 lineup.

Per Fashion Snap, the Comme des Garçons Homme x New Balance 550 styles will be released sometime in October. Keep it locked to Sole Collector for official updates.
