A Final Ode: Louis Vuitton FW22 Immortalized Virgil Abloh’s Legacy

Published

on

There are no bigger shoes to fill than the ones that Virgil Abloh designed while directing Louis Vuitton to unforetold heights. The shockwaves of his sudden passing still reverberate through the luxury house’s gilded walls.

Fitting that Louis Vuitton is still developing a series of tributes to its late artistic director. The “Virgil Was Here” show held last year in Miami was only the first in a series of Abloh homages that LV’s planning for the rest of 2022: after this Fall/Winter 2022 Paris Fashion Week show, for instance, the Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 collection will benefit Abloh’s “Post-Modern” scholarship.

Though Louis Vuitton intimated that SS22 would be Abloh’s final proper runway collection (and Pre-Fall 2022 perhaps his last lookbook), the house asserts that FW22 is actually the last showing of Abloh’s work.

Or, at least, it’s the last time we’ll be seeing an offering comprising primarily Abloh’s designs.

Set amidst a whimsical set that includes a house’s roof (complete with chimney), king-sized bed, and a banquet table that seated a live orchestra performing tunes from Abloh’s repertoire — including a Tyler classic — the FW22 runway show was something old and something new, just like Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2022.

Models danced and strode in Abloh’s oversized caps, buckled trench coats, signature warped tailoring, skirts, washed-out denim jeans, and his original sneaker designs, including the Tactic and Trainer.

Stadium jackets, crystal-embellished truckers, and lots of reworked Vuitton bags, from the classic Trunk to mini Duffles and backpacks, were all here.

Just like in Miami, the entire LV design team stepped out at the end of the show, hugging the models and each other as the entire venue erupted in applause. Some teared up, others simply smiled. Smoke poured from the house’s chimney.

The final procession of white-clad models fitted with angelic lace wings reiterated the motif: this wasn’t about anyone other than Abloh, a selfless acknowledgment of the designer’s immeasurable impact and his lasting legacy.

Dickies Wears Pastels for its 100th Birthday

With Dickies turning 100, I can’t help but scream, “100 more years of workwear!” and yet the first of its celebrations, its Spring/Summer 2022 collection, does that all itself.

At first, it almost feels like a century of Dickies is a stretch; surely it hasn’t been delivering consistent hard-wearing workwear for that long? Yet when you start to consider how many eras it has lived through, alongside the likes of Carhartt (WIP) and Dubbleware, it begins to feel somewhat eternal.

Adopted by fashion and hip-hop with open arms, workwear isn’t going anyway, and with Spring/Summer 2022, Dickies says cheers to that.

The collection offers a lineup consisting of all of the classics we’ve come to love over the years and spins them in a light palette of seasonally appropriate pastels – the lemon yellow and baby pink being particularly attention-worthy.

Beloved staples like the Classic 874 Work Pant, Eisenhower Jacket, and Work Shirt feel brand new thanks to the updated palette, which includes “Green Moss,” “Pale Banana,” “Withered Rose,” and “Porcelain,” as well as “Golden Ochre,” “Celadon Green,” “Cement,” and “Allure.”

Matching “uniform” styles are present throughout SS22, whether that be a short-sleeve shirt and shorts or Work Shirt and pants; these easy-wearing two-pieces serve as a testament to the uniforms Dickies has provided workers with for the past century.

Dickies’ 100th birthday celebrations are only just beginning with the launch of Spring/Summer 2022, as there are plenty more celebrations and special releases planned for the year ahead.

While you wait to see what’s in store, head over to Dickies to shop the latest drops now.

This Syracuse Lookalike Is Our Favorite General-Release 550 Yet

A couple of months back, British retailer Size? Announced the release of an exclusive New Balance pack. The College Pack included a 574 and a 550 in classic two-tone coloring. The orange and white combination inevitably provoked comparisons to the Nike Syracuse colorway, undoubtedly one of Nike’s best varsity palettes.

But, seeing as the pack was a Size? Exclusive, it wasn’t long before the highlight 550 had sold out. Luckily, a new pair of orange New Balance 550s just dropped.

There are a couple of differences between the College pack drop and this latest release, though. The midsole loses its off-white, retro tinge and reverts back to a clean white hue while black accents are brought in to add punch to the outsole, heel, and tongue. Overall, the simplified palette leads to a more emphatic shoe.

Better still, with more of the upper now white — the ‘N’ logo is now white, as well as a number of panels — this orange New Balance 550 is a clean essential as we move into fairer weather.

Shop the orange New Balance 550 below.
