Miami Standard (Bronson, FL) – A Florida mother was detained this week after her 2-year-old daughter was discovered inside a hospital intoxicated and “tweaking” from meth, authorities said.
Debra Scott, 29, took her baby to an emergency facility in Marion County on March 21 and informed medical staff that she was “acting crazy” by flailing her arms, bouncing off walls, and staying up for hours, according to the Levy County Sheriff’s Office.
However, a medical examination indicated that the toddler displayed signs similar to those seen in adults who are “tweaking” from the strong and extremely addictive narcotic, according to officials.
According to investigators, a lab test found that the helpless youngster was high as a result of methamphetamine or other stimulant exposure, and another test revealed that she had opiate exposure.
The toddler tested positive for opiates, which include codeine, heroin, and morphine.
Hospital workers promptly contacted the police.
Scott, who recently moved into a Bronson house with her boyfriend and daughter, noticed the symptoms 12 hours before sending her to the hospital, according to officials. She also never reported the incident to police.
Instead, she called a friend to drive them to a distant hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
When officers questioned Scott, she allegedly acknowledged to having just used meth.
According to officials, the unstable mother and daughter lived with roommates and her lover in a drug-infested home.
A warrant for her arrest was issued on Monday, and she was discovered the following day in Gilchrist County. She was arrested on charges of criminal child neglect and will be transferred to Levy County.
The Levy County Sheriff’s Office criticised the mother in a press release.
“She knowingly put her child at risk and failed to protect the child from dangerous drugs while using dangerous drugs herself.”
