2 Loaded Weapons Found on Campus belonging to Somerset Academy’s Principal

Tampa, Florida: A box containing two loaded guns was found unattended inside a locked room at Somerset Parkland Academy in Florida.

The box was discovered by a school resource officer and was turned over to detectives soon thereafter. After investigation, the authorities revealed that the firearms belonged to Geyler Castro, the school’s principal.

According to Castro, someone unloaded a lot of stuff from her car and mistakenly brought the box containing the guns inside the school.

A letter sent to all the parents by the school representatives briefed the parents about the incident.

Officers from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office looked into the situation and found no evidence of a threat to the students.

In Florida, it’s a felony to have a gun on school property, but “a person may carry a firearm in a vehicle pursuant to s. 790.25(5); except that school districts may adopt written and published policies that waive the exception in this subparagraph for purposes of student and campus parking privileges.”

It is uncertain whether Castro will face charges or not but the parents are shocked by this incident.

“I mean, I didn’t hear anything,” parent Jincy Mathews. “It’s scary. What you’re telling me is scary,” Mathews continued. “Telling the kids not to bring those types of things onto campus, so she should be the model.”

The Academy is situated less than three miles from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The Douglas was the crime scene of the deadly 2018 mass shooting.
