17-year-old Girl Shot Herself to Death after snatching Gun from a Deputy in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, CA: A 17-year-old girl shot herself to death after she snatched the gun from a deputy in Los Angeles County. The incident happened on Sunday.
The teen took the extreme step after getting into an argument and allegedly stealing a deputy’s gun in the lobby of the Industry Sheriff Station, according to authorities.
The incident took place at the Hudson Avenue station at approximately 7:40 p.m. The adolescent girl reportedly went door-to-door with the station, as reported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. An argument broke out as soon as the deputy opened the door.
“The female reached toward the deputy’s firearm, retrieved the firearm from the deputy’s holster … during the altercation, it is alleged that the female suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound with what we believe to be the deputy’s firearm,” said Lt. Spencer of the LASD. “We believe that this incident stems from a family disturbance call that deputies had responded to prior to this incident occurring here at the station.”
No other civilian or the officers were injured. Authorities are still looking into the incident.
Reportedly, as the deputies approached the lobby door, the minor “sprang into the lobby and reached for the deputy’s holstered firearm and took possession of it,” as stated by a deputy.
Investigators determined the event originated from “a family disturbance call” that deputies from the station attended to shortly before the incident, according to a preliminary investigation by murder detectives.
Authorities did not provide further details regarding the domestic incident. Authorities had not yet notified the teen’s next of kin, thus their name remained unknown as of today.
An autopsy will be performed by the office of the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner to ascertain the official cause and manner of death of the teen.
