15-year-old girl raped by Haitian immigrant in Massachusetts

Rockland, MA: Authorities said that a Haitian immigrant residing in a former Massachusetts hotel that is now housing asylum seekers was charged with raping a girl aged fifteen in one of the rooms.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office announced that 26-year-old Cory Alvarez was apprehended by police in the Boston suburb of Rockland. He is currently being jailed without bail on a charge of aggravated rape of a child.

A sexual assault was reported at the former Comfort Inn hotel on Hingham Street just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, according to prosecutors. Police were then summoned to the scene.

The victim, a teen, was located inside, and she was taken to South Shore Hospital by the police.

Upon his Thursday hearing, Alvarez was ordered jailed without bail until his return to court on March 22, after pleading not guilty to the charges of raping the girl.

The Comfort Inn, where the alleged attack took place, is one of several locations across the state that are part of a federal-state initiative to provide shelter to migrants seeking refuge in the United States.

A gang of migrants attacked two New York City police officers in January near Times Square, adding to fears that asylum seekers may be subject to criminal activity at hotels and shelters as a result of the migrant crisis that has engulfed the city and other large cities.

Last week, Massachusetts GOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale called the alleged rape of the 15-year-old girl “an absolute nightmare scenario.”

“I acknowledge the presence of well-intentioned and compassionate residents of Massachusetts who would like for the state to provide refuge for migrants during times of exigency,” Carnevale said.

Now Alvarez is in detention according to federal immigration authorities.
